Call me superficial but I always believed in expensive gifts. Not expensive as in I spent a lot of money on it, but expensive for what it is. Versace shirts, fountain pens, handcrafted dolls, homemade jam sets...you name it.

Here are a few things I've learned from the experience:

1. Chanel wallets - or Chanel anything really - are not made for men. The double C logo makes it look like a purse instantly.

2. Fendi wallets are overpriced and that scattered signature pattern is just horrible.

3. Kenneth Cole makes the best leather stuff for men - and it's not overly expensive.

4. Versace shirts. Let's face it. Versace shirts are made for gay men. Or men that doesn't look gay with VERY TIGHT shirts.

5. When a door to door salesperson come to your door, take a look at his/her wares first. Sometimes you get some really good stuff.

6. Don't ever get anything full price.

7. If you're getting an electronic product, buy it OEM and get a leather case with it. It looks better.

8. Don't go for the "latest look" when you're buying gifts. Find something that lasts.
